Marvin’s Road to Success with JLS

Many fans may not know that before Marvin Humes was a member of JLS, he was actually a part of another group known as VS.
The 23-year-old singer from South-East London began his singing career at the startlingly young age of five, and he soon began attending a professional performance school each week on top of his regular secondary education. When he had finally finished with school, Marvin had a chance meeting with Simon Webbe, to whom Marvin passed on a few of his own demo tapes.

From there, Marvin was given the opportunity to join a group that Webbe was putting together, a band known as VS. Marvin happily accepted this opportunity, as it seemed entirely promising.

The group began rehearsing and recording together, and after six months of hard work the group landed a record contract with Innocent Records. The group promoted themselves by acting as support for Blue on two separate national tours. The group had three hit singles in the UK; “Love You Like Mad” placed on the charts at No. 7, “Call U Sexy” at No. 11, and “Make It Hot” peaked at No. 29.

It was a bit unfortunate that VS weren’t able to keep their record deal, but happily Marvin didn’t give up his dreams of making it in the music industry because when he received a call from Ortisé inviting him to become a part of JLS, the rest was history. Marvin keeps the period after his failed contract with VS close to his heart, and thinks of the dismal period that followed as a “reality check,” and as something that has made him stronger as an artist and as a person.
