The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) has come up with a new strategy to improve the standard of health and safety in workplaces. The strategy has been named as Be Part of the Solution, and as the name suggests, it aims at involving all stakeholders in improving the working conditions across the country.

The health and safety situation is quite worrying in the UK. Almost 50% of the workers know at least one person who has been seriously injured in a workplace accident. A recent survey also indicated a great deal of ignorance about this problem. When asked to guess how many serious injuries or deaths had taken place in workplaces in the last year, many employees responded with a number close to 3000. This is a staggering 45 times lower than the actual figure, which stood at 136,000.

However, both the employers and the employees understand the importance of safety of workers. Almost 9 out of 10 senior managers believe that the workforce is the most important part of an organization, while almost 6 out of 10 employees say that their morale is boosted when the employer takes positive steps to ensuring their safety. It was recently revealed that many business leaders are considering cuts in health and safety spending in order to deal with recession. This has raised a lot of concern, as it is believed that any reduction in spending would drastically increase the risk to the workers, which would not only lead to an increase in the number of accidents but would also result in many more claims against the companies.

To deal with the situation, the HSE is asking top managers of companies to give their commitment to the cause of health and safety by becoming part of its new initiative.
