Indonesia Faces Clearer Path to Japan Open Title after Withdrawals Emerged
Indonesia’s chances of winning the prestigious Japan Open have increased following the emergence of withdrawals from high profile shuttlers in the said event. This Southeast Asian country, known for producing some of the world’s best badminton players, is currently experiencing a drought when it comes to getting Super Series championship titles.
On Tuesday, the men’s doubles players did not even pick a badminton racquet in its first round match as Korean duo Lee Yong Dae and Jung Jae Sung, the tournament third seeds, decided to pull out at the last minute. This was due to Lee Yong Dae’s decision to continue getting treatment on an arm injury that he got from a recent tournament.
Indonesia’s Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki and Rian Sukmawan got an easy pass to the third round where they will meet Japanese qualifiers Shu Wada and Rei Sato or fellow Indonesians Mohammad Ahsan and Bona Septano.
Another high profile doubles team that pulled out was Chinese players Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng, the tournament sixth seeds. This means that only two doubles teams from China will compete in the tournament as opposed to Indonesia’s six doubles teams.
In mixed doubles, Lita Nurlita and Devin Lahardi Fitriawan have better chances of winning the event following Lee’s withdrawal. Despite this development, the Indonesian team won’t be taking their first round opponents from Korea. The duo are slated to meet Kim Min Jung and Yoo Yeon Seong.
